UX Design Case Study: Florida Dachshund Rescue (FLDR.org)

Executive Summary:

This project focused on improving the user experience (UX) of FLDR.org, a website dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dachshunds in Florida. Through user research, analysis, and iterative design, we aimed to create a website that is user-friendly, informative, and ultimately drives successful dachshund adoptions.

Project Timeline:

  • Duration: 2 weeks

  • Scope: 4 use case studies, website redesign, and initial development

Challenges:

  • Website outdated and difficult to navigate.

  • Information overload and lack of clarity for potential adopters.

  • Limited engagement with the rescue organization.

Methodology:

  1. User Research:

    • Interviews: Conducted interviews with potential adopters, volunteers, and rescue staff to understand their needs, pain points, and expectations.

    • User testing: Observed and analyzed users interacting with the existing website to identify usability issues and areas for improvement.

    • Surveys: Gathered quantitative data on user preferences and website satisfaction.

  2. Information Architecture:

    • Content audit: Analyzed existing website content for accuracy, relevance, and organization.

    • User flows: Developed user flows for key tasks such as browsing adoptable dogs, submitting adoption applications, and donating.

    • Site map: Created a new site map that prioritizes user needs and facilitates easy navigation.

  3. Design and Development:

    • Wireframing and prototyping: Created low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes to test and refine design concepts.

    • Visual design: Developed a new visual identity that is modern, friendly, and reflects the playful nature of dachshunds.

    • Initial development: Implemented core functionalities based on the user-centered design.

  4. Testing and Iteration:

    • Usability testing: Conducted usability testing with new prototypes to identify any remaining issues and refine the design.

    • Iterative development: Made adjustments to the design and functionality based on user feedback and testing results.

Use Case Studies:

  • Adopting a Dachshund: This use case focused on simplifying the adoption process for potential dog owners. We streamlined the application process, provided clear adoption criteria, and showcased individual dogs in a compelling way.

  • Making a Donation: This use case aimed to increase monetary contributions to the rescue. We improved the donation form, highlighted the impact of donations, and offered various donation options.

  • Volunteering at FLDR: This use case addressed the need for volunteers to support the rescue's operations. We made it easy to find volunteer opportunities, learn about the roles and responsibilities, and submit volunteer applications.

  • Staying Connected with FLDR: This use case focused on increasing user engagement with the rescue. We implemented email opt-in forms, social media integration, and blog updates to keep users informed about FLDR's activities and success stories.

Results:

  • Improved user satisfaction: Usability testing showed a significant increase in user satisfaction with the new website.

  • Increased adoption rates: Early data suggests a rise in adoption inquiries and applications following the website launch.

  • Stronger donor engagement: Improved donation page design and messaging led to a notable increase in online donations.

  • Enhanced volunteer recruitment: The new website attracted more volunteer inquiries and applications.

Conclusion:

This UX design project successfully revitalized FLDR.org, creating a user-friendly platform that promotes dachshund adoptions, fosters engagement with the rescue, and ultimately helps fulfill their mission of saving dachshunds in need. We look forward to further improving the website based on ongoing user feedback and data analysis to ensure its continued success in connecting dachshunds with loving families.
